In his introduction, Umberto Eco writes that the five essays in this book are occasional pieces and ethical pieces. Their occasional nature arises from their being speeches given at some conference or articles commissioned for publication. Their ethical nature is what makes them moral pieces: “they treat of what we ought to do, what we ought not to do, and what we must not do at any cost.”What we ought to do, or what fans of Eco ought to, is read this short book – a mere 111 pages. I read [...]

Umberto Eco, Five Moral Pieces (New York: Harcourt, Inc 2001), translated by Alastair McEwen. Pp. 111. Hardcover $23.00.I had never read anything by Umberto Eco, and I knew that he is a leading thinker of our time. This was the book I picked up to read to acquaint myself with his philosophy and writing style. It's a fairly short book. It's comprised of five chapters, which are essentially five independent essays. The essays are: Reflections on War, When the Other Appears on the Scene, On the Pres [...]

I received this book by mistake from (had ordered another). There must be fate involved, so I read it.The book contains 5 essays by the spanish (oops, Italian) philosopher, Umberto Eco, of whom I've never heard of "Reflections on War", "When the Other appears on the scene","On the Press", "Ur-Fascism", and "Migration, Tolerance, and the Intolerable". Two of these caught my attention, not so much the others (my fault entirely I'm sure). When the Other appears on the scene is a reflection on whe [...]

Very short collection of five essays around morality - two stand out in particular. The first essay "Reflections on War" tries to update Clausewitz's teachings with modern warfare. Eco "updates" the model of information flow in wartime, since nowadays it's not two big sources of information anymore. Instead, Eco models this flow as a neural network, where each interested party is a node in a network, with its own interests and impact on the entire network (machine learning says hi). This is a ve [...]

Gost [...]

It hurt my head a bit. I enjoyed (?) the characteristics of Ur-Fascism, which were spookily familiar in the new US presidency. Interesting comments on Loyalty versus Truth, too. But on the whole, I found it hard work, and at times too parochial re. Italian matters to engage me fully. The discussion of the source(s) of morality could have been my favourite, but not as accessible to my little brain as I would have wished.

Five essays on moral aspects of politics; one on war, one on nonreligious bases for morality, one on the press, one on the nature of fascism, and one on migration and intolerance. These were interesting mainly as showing where Eco is coming from; they were somewhat disappointing in that he basically just gave his opinions without any real argument for them, and in that (especially in the essay on the press) they were very specific to Italy.

interesting, the essay on ur-fascism is very pertinent today.

This collection seems a bit eccentric when considered as a whole, on account of the different topics covered and the different audiences and tones for which the essays were written. They are unified by the spark of clarified brilliance that defines Eco's writing, which is precise and incisive. Though it seems absurd to select favorites from a pool of only five, Ur-Fascism stands out as a blend of personal experience, political and historical analysis, and theoretical distillation of what fascism [...]

Passionate words from a great intellectual. Stimulating and enlightening, Eco speaks with knowledge and tact to address pertinant issues. Although more personally adressed to his countryman, his ideas are internationally relevant.

Recomendo. Tem de imprensa até imigrações.Vale a pena.

Umberto Eco describes the five essays in this collection as “occasional pieces”. He has gathered essays on war, the basis for ethics, the press, fascism, and tolerance amid diversity. These are serious issues and he treats each of them seriously. However, on occasion, one gets the impression that Eco should have put a little more time and effort into the pieces given that he chose to re-publish them as a collection. The first piece was written in 1991 during the first Gulf War and Eco’s hy [...]
