I greatly enjoyed this anthology of travely and adventures of the fictional writer Henry Bech (Upton's alter ego) in a state-sponsored trip in the Soviet Union. The adventures are humorous but in a comical and satirical manner. Describing tales of stark cultural exchanges between East and West, Updike writes with determined brilliance but also the same bleak intent portrayed by the stories' woeful protagonist. Cruel, barbed, and bitter to read, the stories are a stark reminder of the ultimate meaningless of civilisation's intellectual endeavours.

I only even sort-of liked the parts that were similar to "Naked Lunch". Won't read again. Not badly written- just not my thing.
