*****I was given this book through First Reads in return for an honest review.*****I'm gonna come straight out and say I'm not a Christian. I don't really have a religion, I guess? I don't know, I'm just here. **I kept an open mind throughout the whole book** I love reading these types of books because I want to know how Christians think, how their minds work and what their mind set is.Every time I receive a book like this after I finish it I either a) recommend it to my Civ teacher or b) just [...]

J.A. Meddlers’s subtitle “Living a Grace-Addicted, Truth-Filled, Jesus-Exalting Life” is the reason I picked this book! Yes, I want that to describe me…in my everyday life…with my husband, with our kids, as I homeschool, in my interactions with family, friends, strangers…!!Meddlers recommends to read a chapter a day. I didn’t do that. However, looking back I would echo his suggestion. I used a color for a highlighter (as a mom with 4 kids there is always at least one around!), so m [...]

Robert Farrar Capon once described the Gospel as "two-hundred proof Grace– bottle after bottle of pure distillate of Scripture, one sip of which would convince anyone that God saves us single-handedly. a flat announcement that the saved were home before they started. Grace has to be drunk straight: no water, no ice, and certainly no ginger ale" This book is a whack upside the head and a kind hand on the shoulder all at once. It's a shout "Hey, over here!" and it's a whisper- "Look, here it is. [...]

When I started reading this book, I must confess my expectations were not the greatest. I assumed it would to be dry and boring, unable to really teach me anything didn’t already know. I am happy to say that was not the case! I found it interesting, entertaining and enlightening. No there wasn’t any new information I have not studied or heard of before, but I understand now that teaching me something new was not the author’s goal. He wanted share the things I already knew but to see them i [...]

There are a multitude of Christian books, both in the Christian living section as well as the more academically minded fare, that use the buzzword “gospel” or its associated term “gospel-centered.” These terms have become so cliché that in part they have to some degree lost their theological, biblical, and everyday impact, if the term is even defined at all these days. Into the mix of the “gospel” focused textual overload comes a much more defined and appropriate entry, namely that [...]

Medders encourages us to preach the gospel to ourselves. We need to be gospel centered, to make Jesus the center of our lives and motivation. He spends a good part of the book on gospel worship as that is a heart matter. He also writes about gospel community, our gospel identity, and our gospel mission. This is a good book reminding Christians of the centrality of the gospel. Unfortunately there are no discussion questions.See my complete review at bit/1FLiRpO.I received a complimentary copy of [...]

tweetable gospel truthMeddlers has delivered a full course gospel meal in bite-sized portions. Meant, seemingly, as a daily devotional, the book tackles texts that point to gospel-centered life of which we should all be about. To me it read like a collection of tweets in paragraph form, perhaps just Medders' style or my state of mind while reading! The gospel truth is unadulterated and will encourage you.

This was an interesting devotional that had a lot of good points about one main topic: keeping Jesus and the gospel the focal point of your life. Medders starts out by pointing out why this is important and how this will affect your life. The second and largest section talks about worship and just some of the topics are that Jesus is worthy of worship, the importance of singing in corporate worship as spiritual warfare and loving the whole Bible because it all points to Jesus. One of the more in [...]

GOSPEL FORMED J. A. MEDDERSThis is a great devotional book that will help you to live "a Grace-Addicted, Truth-filled, Jesus-Exalting Life." There are 5 sections: Gospel-Starting Block, Worship, Identity, Community and Mission, and 27 chapters, almost enough for one a day, like a vitamin. You will smile, maybe even laugh, and learn or be reminded of things learned but long ago forgotten. But even before starting this book gives you a HOW TO on using this book to make you more like Jesus. This is [...]

If you are a Christian like myself then you are well aware that our fight is to constantly remember the gospel of Jesus Christ. My heart condition is always expressed in sin when I forget about what Jesus has done for me. I am constantly in need to be reminded of that so I am always appreciative of books that do that, especially ones that do it well. This is one of those books. I picked it up on a whim because it was free on kindle and I am really glad I did. It is setup as a devotional type boo [...]

You are in for a spritual renewing as you read this very life changing book. Growing up as a preacher's kid, I can totally relate to his description of a pew rat. I went to church every time the doors were open. I acted prim and proper and did all the right things. However, I didn't grasp the concept of what being a Christian was. As the author explains,"Without the gospel, we lack the proper understanding of any doctrine , and especially a robust knowing of God himself." We need to keep Christ [...]

Gospel Formed by J.A. Medders is a powerful book. Categorized as Christian Life/Devotional it is a book that will make you laugh and ponder at the same time. I found myself looking at my "walk" in a new light. This book is refreshing. Whether you are a new or seasoned Christian you will glean something from every one of the 27 chapters in this book. I certainly did. Don't let the 27 chapters scare you. The book is only 200 pages. The book is relatively small, but the message it contains is might [...]

Review Title: Live in Christ, Him in You (review of Gospel Formed by J. A. Medders)Reviewer: Janice S. Garey***** 5 StarsThis book does an important service by explaining how to do life as the subtitle indicates: Living a Grace-Addicted, Truth-Filled, Jesus-Exalting Life. The author uses easy to understand expressions and infuses his writing with his American cultural awareness to engage the reader. Most chapters are short and designed for reading one per day.As I read, I had a number of aha! mo [...]

Right off the bat Mr. J.A. Medders and I got off to a good start in his book Gospel Formed. In the introduction he states, "You don't need new tricks and tactics but the truth of Jesus, his person, and his work -- the gospel."Exactly! What follows is a small put powerful book with an entire focus on just that -- the gospel. With 27 short chapters plus a lengthier introduction and short conclusion, you could read a few pages or one chapter a day to give you a reminder every single day to keep the [...]

Do you know Jesus? Do you live in the light of the gospel? It is so easy to get started on the right track but then veer off course and feel discouraged because all you do is work, work, work to be good, achieve God's acceptance, stop participating in that particular sin or just keep your head above water. Medder's book is about living life in the context of the gospel. It's about falling in love with Jesus all over again. It's about realizing that it is in Him and because of Him that we live an [...]

“Above all, worship Jesus. Make much of Jesus. It’s about him” (13). Jeff starts Gospel-Formed with this admonition. I take it as his target for the book, and so it’s only fair to measure the success of what Jeff does by it. I’ll cut to the chase and argue that he achieved his goal. He starts off reminding his readers it’s all about Jesus and to take in the Scriptures through out the book which are the real focus because they tell us about Jesus. And I think he hits his mark. Jeff gi [...]

There are 27 chapters which can be read a chapter a day as a devotion. The Forward discussing the Gospel is a lengthy description of what the Gospel is, how it works, etc. Each day begins with verses, used along with the study of the word about the Gospel. Jesus is to be put first, as He should be, and each day the study is to help you to know Him more, love Him more, worship Him more, to put Him first in your life.I too, was a pew rat. We thought the church was our home away from home. And, yes [...]

One can see the love of Jesus in the authors writing. He points out how God makes him strong. That is is all by him to do the transformation. By the time you are done with this book you will walk way knowing life is all about Jesus! One things that struck me was how J.A says " resolve not to have small thoughts of Jesus." I was left with a marveling feeling about the Lord. The author sets forth the gospel pointing out that it does not need to be dresses up to inspire worship. Learn in this volume [...]

This book focuses on the gospel of Jesus Christ and what it really means to live the Christian life. He shows us what's really important and reminds us how it was when we first were saved. He talks about grace and truth. That is what the whole Christian life is really about!J. A. Medders writes in a very easy to read style. The chapters are broken up into bite-size pieces so this is very good to read just one chapter a day or read it the whole way through! It is great to use as a devotional. I w [...]

Gospel-centered DevotionalSome devotional books read like to-do lists - here are the things that Jesus needs/wants you to do today. Others are full of sappy emotionalism - Jesus just wants you to enjoy your Starbucks and trip to the mall. Some even attempt to supplement the words of Jesus. This devotional book reminds us that the gospel is enough. It needs no accentuating nor supplementing. It only needs to be believed, embraced, and adored. We do that by fixing our eyes on Jesus who is the autho [...]

This little devotional is so refreshing. To read the stories that I thought I knew from a new perspective is always amazing. Each of the chapters are short and cover different topics. The different sections are:1. The Gospel Starting Block2.What is Gospel Worship3. What is Gospel Identity4. What is Gospel Community5. What is Gospel MissionSo as is evident from these sections, this book is based on the Gospel and Jesus Christ.I would recommend this to old or new Christians.I was given this book b [...]

Fantastic ReadI would recommend this read to anyone who just received Christ as their savior and also to anyone who has been saved for 20 years. We must have a clear vision of the gospel. It has and will always be about Jesus.

Parts of this book deserved 4 stars, but I'll keep it at 3. It was an enjoyable book, simple to read, and showed the Good News with clarity. It just seemed like there are other books that do a better job at that. But by all means, read it!
