I believe I read most of Connie Mason's books sometime between 2003 and 2004. "Flame" is book #1 of a set. Book #2 is "Shadow Walker" and was wonderful, too. I have 5 stars written inside the book flap and remember it as one of my favorites. This is a well written love story set in the United States (western), just after the Civil War. Hot!

I read this when I was a teenager and I don't think I was particularly impressed then. Too much false bravado and many instances of almost rape.

I like the premise of enemies forced to work together, they usually make my favourite romances. I like when the animosity turns to reluctant respect and affection. However there wasn't that much respect where Tanner was concerned and Ashley was not developed enough for me to have any real connection with her. I liked the start of the story and the set-up, and I liked the realistic elements the author included about the wagon journey. I didn't feel too strongly about any character negatively or p [...]

This has been a go to favorite historical western romance read of mine for years. I have read this more times than I can count and I happened to do so this weekend. It's been a few years since my last reading and it was just as emotionally enthralling as the first time. Ashley Webster, a yankee school teacher from New York is looking for someone to pose as her husband to pacify a wagon train master, who will not let single females travel with his group without parents or a husband. Tanner MacTav [...]

I was needing a break and Connie Mason is one of my go-to authors for that. She doesn't make you think too hard or drag down the pace with inner monologues. She's totally upfront and tells you exactly what you'll be getting from her.Chicago school marm Ashley Webster needs a fake husband in order to travel to Oregon. (Just go with it.) Former Confederate Tanner MacTavish is so mentally unhinged that the mere color of blue will set him off on a rampage. Which is ironic since blue is the color of [...]

I did not enjoy this book. All the plot points turn on almost-rapes, rape, protecting rapists, and force. Each time I thought the author was working on creating a romance between tanner and Ashley, more rape/force/leering implications are brought into the picture. I will not be reading any more of Mason's writing.

The cover of this book I think is very unappealing, but an interesting read by CM. A true insight to what life was like in the wild west of America after the civil war. The love story was captivatng and the battles with indians and law breakers throughout added intense drama!
