Sills' series "A Guide for Children" provides a predictable presentation of information on many common topics. The large text set on a white page provides easy access for young readers. Those wanting more detailed information on each colored plate will find it in the Afterword.I always find out something I did not know - even in brief texts such as these: this time I found out that sea otters and polar bears are two of five separate groups of marine mammals (the other three are cetaceans, pinnip [...]

Frustrating, because there were these amazing pictures, and then text that said almost nothing. Then, when you went to the back, suddenly there were longer descriptions for every single picture. Those were probably a little too long, but if some balance could have been struck between them it would have been a great book, and it just wasn't.

This lovely picture book is a simple guide to marine mammals. Each double page spread has a short piece of factual text and lovely full page painting of different marine mammals. I think this one will be great for the littlest kids to start them thinking about marine mammals and it will make a great mentor text for the early grade kids who starting to write non fiction.

After reading this book, the reader will have a good handle on the variety of mammals that live in the oceans, as well as what makes an animal a mammal. This and all the books in the “A Guide for Children” are valuable tools for elementary school classrooms.
